Tom Wardle has been on the air at WDVR since 1995. His “Country Classics” and “Honky Tonks and Heartaches” shows are dedicated to the presentation, promotion and preservation of pure country music. Like Tom says, “If it ain’t traditional, it ain’t country!”.
”Honky Tonks and Heartaches” features exclusively independent artists who are recording real country music, and won’t be heard on any of today’s major market, so-called ‘country’ stations. Many of these ‘unknowns’, and their music, have become ‘known’ to, and very popular with, WDVR listeners. Justin Trevino, Jimmy Eaves, Ron Crites and Frankie Miller are but a few who have been Tom’s on-air guests. In 2002, Tom received the Twangtown USA award for “USA Country DJ of the Year” and “USA Country Radio Show of the Year”. In 2003, he was chosen for the “Country Radio Station of the Year” Award by Airplay International in Nashville.
Live from the WDVR barn, “Country Classics” features primarily the legends of country music….the artists who made country music what it is…...Ernest Tubb, Buck Owens, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Kitty Wells and so on. Not only are the big hits of these artists aired, but so are many of the obscure, rarely heard recordings from the ‘golden age’ of country music. And….a lot of steel guitar music!! On-air interview credits include Bill Anderson, Vern Gosdin, Ferlin Husky, Jeannie Seely, Leona Williams, Ernie Ashworth, Billy Walker, Ray Price, Stonewall Jackson, Norma Jean, and Hank Locklin, amongst others. Owing to his interest in, and dedication to, traditional country music, Tom is well known to many of country music’s legends….some have become personal friends, all of whom gratefully acknowledge and appreciate the continued airplay of their music.
Tune in….It’s all traditional, all country, all the time!
