Jim Hynes, our Blues Music Director, has been with WDVR for over 4 years. Jim has been doing radio for almost 20 years now on non-commercial stations in Connecticut, Michigan, and New Jersey. Although he took about 12 years off – "Once you've done this, it's in your blood and you keep going back. It's important to have a life away from your day job." He hosts Blue Monday from 10 PM to midnight every week and as the founder of the All Night Diner (1AM -6AM Saturday mornings), rotates hosting with Richard Gerstner, Len Werner, and Buckeye Mel. "It's all about roots music, whether that's blues, gospel, r & b, country, folk, or rock n roll. This is one big tent; it's not about narrowing the formats into Americana or alternative country or whatever these new categories are called. It's roots music and all of it has a foundation in the blues", Jim says.
"Yes, it's more than doing radio. I feel that it is important to get to the major conventions and festivals to meet the artists, hopefully get some interviews to put on the air, and to reinforce our contacts with the record labels and promoters. We are the lifeblood for most of the people you'll hear me play. And, many of these traditions that began with Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rogers, and others are still being carried on today. It may sound a bit different but it's all there. Just listen to the music."
